Nude Bea Arthur Painting By John Currin Sells For $1.9 Million At Christie’s Auction
The controversial artist John Currin painted “Bea Arthur Naked” in 1991, which features the late actress in nothing but her birthday suit. It’s just one of many nude paintings created by the artist, who tends to choose provocative women — both celebrities and nonentities — as his subject matter.
“It’s historically significant,” Christie’s representative Koji Inoue says of the Arthur portait in a statement to The New York Post. “It’s radical to sexualize someone people think of as asexual.” (Ed. note: “Asexual?” Really?)
The painting was expected to fetch between $1.8 and $2.5 million, so whomever scored the naked Bea got their famous artwork for a bargain price. You can view more of Currin’s titillating imagery here. All we can say is, thank goodness Blanchewasn’t around for this sale because she would have been so jealous.
Wait… In “Airheads,” weren’t one of the hostage negotiation demands for a picture of Bea Arthur naked? Guess we know what they got, huh?

I swear, if I see that fucking suicide-by-train gif one more time, I’m going to start removing people I follow and laying down a huge ignore smackdown on them. As someone who struggles with suicidal thoughts, I don’t need to see this shit. If you want to raise awareness, fine. I’m all in favor of seeing the suicide hotline numbers, quotes of encouragement, all that great stuff. That stuff is HELPFUL. Watching someone jump in front of a train while others watch and one person tries in vain to stop them over and over and over in the course of a minute… that is NOT helpful in any way to someone who sometimes wishes she had the nerve to throw herself into traffic and be done with it.
Think before you repost. You might find it powerful, but I find it a serious step back in the progress I have to struggle with every single day.
